METABOLITOS SECUNDARIOS: LA RIQUEZA QUÍMICA OCULTA EN LA NATURALEZA

Resumen


Los metabolitos secundarios de las plantas constituyen una amplia diversidad de compuestos especializados derivados del metabolismo primario que desempeñan funciones clave en los procesos de adaptación, defensa y comunicación ecológica. A partir de intermediarios metabólicos centrales como acetil-CoA, ácido shikímico, ácido mevalónico y fosfato de metileritritol, las plantas generan más de 200,000 estructuras químicaspertenecientes a familias como terpenoides, compuestos fenólicos, flavonoides, alcaloides, ácidos grasos especializados y policétidos. Estas moléculas participan enprocesos de defensa frente a estrés biótico y abiótico, protección contra patógenos y herbívoros, atracción de polinizadores, señalización química y regulación del crecimiento. La comprensión de sus principales rutas biosintéticas (incluyendo la vía del acetato, del shikimatoy de las rutas MVA/MEP para isoprenoides)ha impulsado el desarrollo de diversasestrategias,orientadas a la producción de compuestos bioactivos con aplicaciones farmacéuticas, nutracéuticas e industriales. 

 En este contexto, los metabolitos secundarios representan la expresión química de la biodiversidad vegetal y un puente estratégico entre fisiología, ecología y biotecnología.
